Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast and Lent

Fat Tuesday, was a real treat for the 2nd graders. They celebrated with a yummy pancake breakfast! 2nd grade mothers were awesome at flipping those pancakes!

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Lent last 40 days and we are learning about prayer, sacrifice, and almsgiving (helping those less fortunate). Each student has chosen to "give up" something special or "do" something extra special in preparation for Jesus' Crucifixion. On Easter, we will celebrate the risen Lord. Take a peek at one second grader who "gave up" TV for lent...

The 1st Annual SJOA Musical Production...

Many of our second graders participated in our first annual school musical dinner theater, The Magical Land of Oz. Mrs. Hatfield and Mrs. Schneider directed the play with our 1st grade through 8th graders. It was amazing! So many of the kids participated on stage, backstage, or running coat check or bake sale.

The Finish Line Comes to Visit SJA!

Finish Line employees were the very special guests in 1st and 2nd grade. They came to discuss children's athletic shoes and to survey the class on what shoes they like/dislike. As a thank you, Finish Line left 5 pairs of shoes to "raffle off" to 5 lucky 2nd graders! They also brought ice cream treats for all students. As a bonus, they gave Mrs. Breen a $50 gift card. Mrs. Breen went shopping and bought new playground balls and jump ropes for recess! We ALL were Finish Line winners!

Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr Day 2010

The first Annual Martin Luther King, Jr Day celebration was held at SJA this year the Friday before the National Holiday. All students participated in a peace march, sang songs, and were inspired by poems and readings. Mrs. Bartone, our cafeteria lunch mom, prepared a wonderful marble cake for all to enjoy.

Christmas Around the World 2009

"Christmas Around the World" took us to many countries for the holidays. In keeping with the school theme for this year, Europe, each class chose a country to study. 2nd grade is spending the year in IRELAND. The Christmas party invited students in Pre-K, Kindergarten 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade travel around the world to Italy, Germany, France, Sweden and even to a Reader's Theatre. In Ireland, the students enjoyed making a shamrock Christmas ornament with their picture on it, tasting delicious Irish Shortbread (butter cookie with green sprinkles)and learning an Irish jig.

Field Trip to the Caring Place Adult Day Care

In November 2009 the 2nd graders made some recycled birdhouses. These were given to the elderly client~ their new friends on our "A Caring Place Adult Day Care" field trip. The older adults were entertained by the 2nd grade singing songs, some fun Bingo, and a healthy treat shared by all. This "service" field trip was enjoyed by all ages! We can't wait to visit "A Caring Place" again in the spring.

Halloween Fun and Learning!

The 2nd grade Halloween part was very, scary fun. The students enjoyed some slimy fun with the guess the creepy textures in the box game, some estimation jars of Halloween treats, yummy create your own fruit face snack, and of course~ The Halloween Dance Party with all their favorite moves. We have some great dancers in our class!

Oh When the Saints Go Marching In...

"Oh, when the saints go marching in..." The 2nd grade has a tradition for All Saint's Day each Nov. 1. The students choose a saint based on their name, birthday-feast day, or a connection in their life based on the saint's patron. They learn about their saint, dress as their saint and carry one symbol representing the saint. 2nd graders received a holy card of their saint and prepared the liturgy for the All School Mass at St. Joan of Arc. Enjoy the pictures....

"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs"

On a rainy Oct. 9, Grades 2-3 traveled by bus to the Glendale Movie Theater to watch this movie. It was fun to compare/contrast the book and the movie! At the end of the show, a lady and her grandchild came over to compliment us on our good behavior. We represented St. Joan of Arc School very well.

Fire Safety Month

Captain Jim Redd, a local firefighter, visited SJA last week to remind us of important fire safety tips. We learned about checking our home for smoke alarms and practicing a home evacuation plan with our families. His fire clothes weigh a lot!

Johnny Appleseed

Johnny Appleseed is our legendary hero of the 2nd Grade Apple Unit. We taste-tested various apples, graphed our favorites, made fresh applesauce, delighted in the delicious, warm Apple Brown Betty dessert, toured Tuttles Apple Orchard in Greenfield, sang great songs! We even “made” our own apples, for real! Here you must meet our own local “SJA Appleseeds”…………

Apple Brown Betty Dessert
Spray your baking dish with cooking spray.
Peel and thinly slice your favorite apples.
Make a crumbly mix for the topping: (Melt ½ stick butter, ½ c flour, 3-4 packages of Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal, lots of cinnamon)
Top the apples with the crumbly mix.
Bake on 350 for 20-30 min.
Serve on vanilla ice cream (or delicious without!)

2nd Grade Homemade Applesauce
Core your favorite apples. (We used the skin for vitamins.) Fill your blender with these apples. Add water to fill 1/3 of blender. Blend until desired. Serve in bowls. Top with cinnamon. Enjoy!

Freddy Fever

Freddy Fever came to St. Joan of Arc to grab some BIG spirit! The 2nd graders made fancy signs and prepared some songs and cheers to “Fire the Fever Up” for their Playoffs!

Snakehead Ed

Snakehead Ed visited St. Joan of Arc K – 2nd and brought many sizes and species of snakes! The entertainment was educational, hands-on and enjoyed by all. This program was a kick-off event for our “Living Things” unit in Enrichment class.

Your eClassroom is a new tool to enhance the educational experience for you, your students and their families

An eClassroom is Essentially a Blog
Perhaps one of the most fascinating tools that has emerged from the Internet cloud in recent years is the Blog. A shortening of the term Web log, the Blog is an online publishing tool that enables people to easily publish their loves, passions, dislikes, peeves, discoveries, and insights.

Blogging is also showing up in schools, where teachers have known for a long time that students develop better communication skills when they are authentically communicating. A number of educators are helping their students developing their writing skills by having them publish their work as blogs, and then invite comments from people in the outside.

There are many freely available tools that facilitate blogging, but none seem especially suited for the classroom. That is the reason for developing the eClassroom for SJA. This online blogging tool is explicitly designed with teachers and students in mind, where the teacher can evaluate, comment on, and finally publish students' blog articles in a controlled environment. It is and will be constantly in development. We need your input to refine the look, content, layout of the eClassroom.

There are many options available to teachers who utilize web journals (blogs) to enhance the learning experience. Teaching in a participatory culture can be challenging, but rewarding. Today, teachers have to learn to communicate in the language and style of their students—who some call digital natives (inhabitants of the Web 2.0 world).

Assignments, etc.
For students in grades 4—8, the eClassroom will be the source point for classroom activites, supplemental learning resources, assignments, long-tern projects, links to relevant sites, field trips, etc. How you integrate your eClassroom may vary from other teachers, but understand that with regular use, this tool will become a vital part of your curriculum and teaching style.
